about

Trapped In The Song Place

The album title comes from my then 5 year old son. One day, after I bought him a used xylophone in a pawn shop, he banged out a raucous dissonant tune and announced that it was called “Trapped In The Song Place”. I asked him to draw a picture of the song place and the artwork here is the result.

This album came about as I realized that, other than playing a gig or learning songs for a gig, all the music I was listening to was instrumental stuff. And a wide rich variety from classical masters to modern classical, all types of jazz, the golden age rock instrumentals, fusion and funk.

I had dabbled in writing songs without lyrics but not exclusively.

I have a stand alone 24 track recorder and a few amps, a compliment of guitars and some microphones so but, I don’t have the capability to record drums in my basement. Also, I’m just not a fan of drum “machines” or the process of recording on the grid. I found out that one can purchase multi-track drum drum performances, recorded well and played by studio quality drummers, on the web. Mostly these tracks are used by composers, producers, beat makers and such chopped in to loops, stems or samples. But I thought, “Why not use the complete performance and build a song around that?” I tried it once and was compelled to keep exploring the idea.

The rest is all me on guitars and bass.

The result is a mix of all of those rock, blues, funk, country and jazz tendencies but, these are all songs in that they have melodies, beginnings middles and ends...with sections that feature improv and variations on themes...not an excuse for a display of chops or a bunch of jam tracks.
